St. Parick´s Day.

Culture is one of the most rewarding  ways of learning a foreign language. Through culture we can  experience both the language and traditions of the country where the language is spoken. We are going to deal in this post with a typical Irish but a the same time worldwide celebration: St. Patrick´s day.

To start with, the idea is to introduce the origins, the characters and traditions so that our students become familiar with this celebration, just in case they haven't heard about it.
Firstly, let's answer a little quizz before reading a text with the story of this saint.  After that, we are going to learn some new vocabulary  related to this celebration and make some pen-and-pencil follow-up practice : word search,  vocabulary activities,  boardgame,  wordcloud , flashcards, vocabulary  key , crossword key

Aspectos socioculturales en la enseñanza del inglés

La lengua y la cultura (enlace). En esta entrada vamos tratar los aspectos socioculturales relacionados con la enseñanza del inglés tanto a través de textos orales como  textos escritos. En anteriores post ya hemos visto como mediante las celebraciones típicas de los países de habla inglesa, St. Patrick´s Day, le hemos abierto la puerta a la cultura irlandesa. En este, vamos a centrarnos en en Reino Unido.
Estamos sometidos aun constante bombardeo de la cultura anglosajona y el inglés: la música, el cine, las series...., sin embargo, nuestro conocimiento es, a veces, muy superficial, basado exclusivamente en clichés y estereotipos. Uno de los roles del profesor  de idiomas es el de convertirse en un mediador cultural que ayude a eliminar prejuicios, ayudando a aceptar la diversidad y la diferencia e intentando dar a conocer dicha cultura y , al mismo, tiempo despertar la curiosidad y el interés por sus gentes, tradiciones, instituciones y demás hechos culturales.
Tarea 1. Lectura  y comprensión de un texto sobre Inglaterra (enlace) y realización de los ejercidos.
Tarea 2. Escucha y comprensión de un texto oral  sobre el London Eye y contestar a las preguntas del test.
Tarear 3. Uno de los métodos más populares para aprender es mediante canciones. En este enlace puedes practicar el ingles y realizar ejercicios mientras escuchas tus canciones favoritas.
Tarea 4. Uno de los temas más populares en cualquier conversación en el Reino Unido es hablar sobre el tiempo. Escucha el audio y responde a las preguntas. (enlace).

Firstly, I would like to welcome you to the  course "Idioma Extranjero y su Didáctica". As St. Valentine´s Day is coming, we are going to start with a trivia quiz and some reading - comprehension activities about the history of the celebration. Finally, we will have a St. Valentine´s Day craft workshop and contest. You can create, make, design or write anything you want. Here you can pick some decorative ideas or class activities. Tarea 2 British / American Culture

On this occasion, we are going to deal with both British /American culture. Languages do not exist in isolation contexts. Each culture is supported by a culture, which can broadly defined as  “the system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviours, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with their world and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through learning” (The culture concept).

As a result, learning a foreign language implies learning about its culture. The idea is to make a study on some of these cultural issues or topics which we could consider as the most representative ones from British / American Culture. In order to achieve our goal, you will have to carry out a task involving the description of one or several of these beliefs, values, behaviours, or any other topic, character or celebration that you could consider of interest.

In order to help you to find information about British culture, Project Britain is a web page were most common topics are presented. You can also have a look at another web page to learn English where you can find plenty of information about British / American Culture so that you can choose the topic to that best fits your interests.
